What is Airway Clearance Therapy?

Airway clearance therapy (ACT) helps people clear mucus from their lungs so they can breathe easier. It works by gently loosening thick, sticky mucus, making it easier to cough out. Using airway clearance regularly helps keep the lungs clear and can lower the risk of infections.

There are different techniques for airway clearance. Some methods use hands‑on techniques, while others use simple devices. Common options include chest physiotherapy, special coughing and breathing techniques, handheld devices, and vest therapy—also called high‑frequency chest wall oscillation (HFCWO).
